• Carry On

Sure, we all knew that we were being exposed to dangerous philosophical realities at far too young an age. What we didn’t expect was the longitudinal cultural consequences: a multi-decade backlash of relatively meaningless and inane lyrics and complete devolution of the concept of melody. Don’t get me wrong; anthems like “I Walk Alone” from Green Day, “Nothing Else Matters” from Metallica, “In the End” from Linkin Park and many others in the past 10 years surely stand out from the crowd; however, the fraction of progressive and thoughtful music production plummeted from about 1985 to 2005. Hopefully, with the growing prevalence and democratization of music enabled by the web, we’ll see a renaissance of unique and clueful artistic expression of all kinds.

    Carry On My Wayward Son

    Refrain:
    Carry on my wayward son
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
    Don’t you cry no more

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
    I was soaring ever higher
    But I flew too high

Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I’m dreaming
    I can hear them say

    Refrain.

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don’t know

On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I’m like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say

    Refrain.

Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life’s no longer empty
But surely heaven waits for you

    Carry on my wayward son
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don’t you cry (don’t you cry no more)

  • Lateralus (full version)- Tool Cover piano/vocal

Absolutely mind-bendingly beautiful. Who needs fricken cable TV?

    Lateralus
Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
    Lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
Lets me see there is so much more and
Beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

    I embrace my desire to
Feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow
To feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
    To bathe in the fountain,
To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
Between the sounds and open wide to suck it in,
I feel it move across my skin.
I’m reaching up and reaching out.
I’m reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one’s been.
We’ll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one’s been.

    Spiral out. Keep going, going…
